Made during my artist residency in Sasayama, Hyogo, Japan, this tumbler is shaped from Japanese clay and finished with Japanese glazes, then fired in an anagama (穴窯) using matsu (松, pine) and nara (楢, oak) from the Sasayama region. As the wood burns, soda and ash fly through the kiln and land on each piece, creating colours and surfaces that can’t be planned or repeated. When you pick one up, you’re holding the exact spot it sat in the kiln.
Each piece is handmade, so size, shape and glaze vary a little from one to the next. The one you see is the one you’ll get, individual and irreplaceable.
